This video shows how to check whether a technical book you want to read is available at a library, using Calil (カーリル), which it describes as Japan’s largest library search site. You search for a title, pick a prefecture, and Calil searches all of its libraries at once, including university libraries, showing whether each copy can be borrowed. Reservations are possible too. Since some technical books cost close to ¥5,000, the video suggests checking the library before buying.

- Access is often wider than you might think. In Tokyo, for example, you can usually use libraries in neighboring wards or in a ward you commute to, and university students can use their university library as well.

- General books work too: Kevin Mitnick’s 欺術 (The Art of Deception) was found in Fukuoka, including in Yanagawa and Fukuoka City.
